Charles and Olga Russell raised their son, Dale, in the small town of Centralia in the state of Washington where he was born on August 28, 1921. After Dale graduated from High School he attended, and received his degree, from Centralia Junior College.
In 1942 Dale enlisted in the U. S. Army Air Corp and subsequently graduated from the class of 43K as a pilot. During WWII Dale served as a pilot for the Combat Cargo Carrying Mules flying over "The Hump." This was a dangerous mission with enormous obstacles which included the Himalayas, the world's tallest mountain chain. Once the planes reached Burma, the jungle offered a different challenge for navigating and landing. Additionally, there was the threat of enemy ground fire.
After the war Dale was stationed in Japan during the occupation then on to Korea. He was discharged at Altus AFB.
Dale and his wife of 52 years make their home in Wichita Falls where Dale retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 52 years.
We are proud to honor Dale Russell as another example of "Our Greatest Generation."
